Between 16 and 23 October 2021, the students from Reykjavik University have been involved in experimental activities and application in the laboratories of the Faculty of Physics of the University of Bucharest, as well as the 3 NanoSAE Research Center. Additionally, they have visited various points of interest in renewable energies in Romania. You can read the article about the experience on the ISE blog.
This project is based on a business idea which aims to reduce energy poverty and create job opportunities in communities in Romania. The proposal outlines a start-up/business incubator/business accelerator model for energy systems. It is based on educating people in the direction of business and green energy.
My capstone project was centered on cryptocurrency mining, in the context of the mining devices being responsible for almost 70 megatons of CO2, more then the emissions of Romania and Iceland together. With the help of a network monitor in blockchain networks, one can filter the IP addresses of miners and then compute how much energy was consumed over a certain period of time. Then, based on the analysis energy distribution system an adequate CO2 mining tax can be determined for each location.
My final project was about the rising pricing of the electrical current. The study analysed the prices for electricity during the last 8 years, concluding that the prices doubled. The solution that is proposed is the installation of residential solar panels on the roofs of the houses. This solution will provide in the end electricity at half-price for the average households in Mehedinți County.
The main idea of my final project was the implementation of geothermals in Romania. Many sources state that Romania has a high potential for geothermal power which can be harvested. On the other hand, Iceland is a true professional when it comes to geothermal energy. An international collaboration with Iceland can allow Romania to study and implement the same technology here on our land. The main purposes are to increase the amount of renewable energy and improve the quality of life as a result.
For the use of the information we learned through the online courses of “ITRES Project – Energy in Iceland” we had to make a project report wich will come as a solution for a problem in Romania that could be solved with renewable energies.
My project idea was the construction of a small-medium hydropower plant on Mures River, near Deva city, with the maximum power of 100kW, that could heat about 200 small houses, with a power of 438 MWh annualy. The houses that could be heated through the hydropower plant are situated in the villages of Banpotoc, Chimindia and Simeria.
